Simple Exercises You Can Do At Work
Simple Exercises You Can Do At Work We know it can be a job in and of itself to squeeze in your workout during the work week, despite best intentions and strategies for success. But what if you could work out during your 9 to 5?Now, were not talking crunches amongst a sea of cubiclesor running around your offices parking garage during your lunch break. Weve got some better options in mind that you can incorporate into your work day, regardless of your profession. Try the following simple exercises and see how much better you feel.SquatsPossibly the easiest and most versatile movement you can do squats just about anywhere You could even do these in the stall when youre taking a quick restroom break.Standing, Incline Push-UpsPush-ups are a solid, total body exercise, and you dont necessarily have to drop down to the ground to get em done. Before you wash your hands in the restroom, place your hands on the counter with your arms tight to your ribs, and walk your feet back until youre st anding at an incline. You can easily crush a few push-ups before anyone even notices.Sun SalutationThis joga sequence can be easily modified for a small space. Start by raising your arms straight up to the sky for mountain pose, and then bring your arms out widebent like goal posts and gently bend backward for an easy chest expander and backbend. Bring your arms back up overhead for mountainpose and bend at the hips for a forward fold, keeping your knees slightly bent and your arms hanging loose. Rise halfway so that your hands can rest on your thighs with a flat back and long neck, and then fold again. Repeat the whole sequence two mora times to complete your Sun A.Standing Yoga PosturesSpeaking of Isometric Core WorkIf you work in a mora relaxed setting, try bringing a blow-up fitness ball to your desk and use it as your new chair. Sitting on one can be a great isometric core workout, as you are forced to engage your abdominals in order to maintain balance on the unstable ball.Ta king the StairsSimilar to walking, climbing stairs is a great and highly underrated way to seamlessly incorporate more activity into your daily life. If you work in a building with more than one floor or park somewhere with multiple levels, choose the stairs over the elevator. If you happen to have a work space with some privacy like an office, classroom with a door or cubicle with high wallsthere are a few other exercises you can incorporate into your day. Though really, you can do these exercises regardless of privacy factors, assuming your manager doesnt mind and that youre comfortable with potentially receiving confused stares from colleagues.Youll have to drop down to the floor for some of these, but they can be completed fairly quickly and without any other equipment, ensuring you can get em done in no timePlankThis is an awesome core workout and can be done either on your hands with straight armsor from your forearms. Be sure to keep your back flat and engage your core rather than sinking your weight into your shoulders.Vinyasa Yoga TransitionsIn other words, doing the following movements in a series. Start in a forward fold, followed by high plank, chaturanga (i.e., the yogi push-up), upward facing dog and downward facing dog.Mountain ClimbersFrom a high plank position, bring your right knee forward to meet your left elbow. Return to high plank, and repeat with the opposite side. You can either do this slowly for 30 to 45 seconds or at a faster pace for more of a cardio burst. The HundredThis Pilates move targets your core and requires you to lay on the floor with your shoulders and head elevated, and arms pumping up and down by your sides while you count your Mississippis to 100. Its a pretty quick exercise, but it does mean you have to feel comfortable getting down on the floor in your work clothes (and that you need the space to do so).Any of the exercises mentioned here could also be done outdoors in a nearby park or gym during your lunch period, or even while on a 15-minute break. Finding Jobs for Former Police Officers
Finding Jobs for Former Police OfficersFinding Jobs for Former Police OfficersThere are plenty of reasons to be a police officer, both tangible and intangible. Just like any other career, though, the time may come when an officer decides to move on. Whether they spend a year or a lifetime working as a police officer, finding a new job or a new career can be challenging. To overcome these difficulties, officers should take a moment to reflect on how you can find a job after working in law enforcement. Jobs After Law Enforcement Opportunities to Use Your Unique Skills Before contemplatinga new career, former officers should take an inventory of the skills theyve acquired during their law enforcement careers. Look for areas that will translate well into civilian careers. Theres a relatively pervasive perception that law enforcement officers utilize knowledge, skills, and abilities that are unique to the profession. Nothing could be further from the truth. Think about the job functio ns of police officers They make arrests, resolve disputes, identify hazards and qualifikation problems and often seek to head them off before they get worse. They write reports, maintain records and files, adhere to a chain of command. All of these functions and more require the application of skills that are vital and valuable in the private sector Sales All too often, police officers underestimate their sale skills. Think about it, though. Officers sell things no one wants handcuffs, court dates and traffictickets. Even in the toughest precinct, officers dont get into altercations every day. Yet more than likely, they issue tickets or make arrests just about every shift. Law enforcement officers have a vested interest in peacefully accomplishing these tasks. They have personal reasons, such as wishing to avoid complaints they have safety reasons, desiring to avoid getting hurt or having to hurt someone else and they have professional reasons, as they recognize the importance o f community-oriented policing and of fostering trust and respect among the citizens they serve. All of these create incentives for officers to hone their sales skill very quickly, and most become very effective at it. How many sales people do you know who can issue someone a $300 speeding ticket, just to have the recipient say thank you after the stop? Interpersonal Communication Similar to sales skills, officers must learn very quickly how to communicate with a whole range of individuals in reservierung to be effective at their jobs. They develop vital interpersonal communication skills, including sympathy, empathy, and the art of listening. Most importantly, they learn how to communicate with people in a variety of ways and in a variety of situations. Leadership Certainly, police officers are accustomed to people doing what they tell them. Leadership, however, has far less to do with barking commands and far more to do with learning how to effectively influence other peopl es behavior. All officers, regardless of rank or responsibility, learn valuable leadership skills early in their careers. The concept is ingrained into them beginning with the first day at the academy, and it permeates throughout their entire careers. Problem Solving Few people are able to work out problems better than law enforcement officers. Due to the independent work environment, officers are often forced to get creative in solving all sorts of problems, big and small. From working around a vehicle or emergency light malfunction to providing feuding neighbors with ways to help them get along better, officers are masters at coming up with solutions. Critical Thinking For police officers, thinking critically means survival. Law enforcement professionals have to think nicht weit davon entfernt sein on their feet and make a snap judgment, including some that literally mean life or death either for them or a suspect. As a normal part of their day-to-day job, police must quic kly and accurately assess situations and devise tactics for dealing with them. They must also be able to quickly adapt to their environments and to other peoples actions. Identifying issues and developing a workable course of action is an almost hourly occurrence for police officers. Emphasize YourStrengths By focusing on strengths and evaluating critical skills and abilities, officers who are looking to start a new career can better market themselves to private employers. The most important key is to realize that what they do, day in and day, out actually does translate into valuable and marketable job skills in almost any field. In order to overcome the perception that law enforcement skills are unique to the profession, officers who are trying to make a career change must learn to articulate exactly how their skills are a good match for potential employers. Looking Forward to Life After Law Enforcement Just as there are many and more reasons to be a police officer, there are also many reasons one may tire of law enforcement. In order to make a successful transition, officers should accentuate their positive traits and make it known that they are exactly the people employers are looking for.

How to Have a Side Gig and Not Get Fired at Work - The Muse
How to Have a Side Gig and Not Get Fired at Work - The MuseHow to Have a Side Gig and Not Get Fired at Work Even though you love your day job, youve got some big ideas for a new passion project. Or maybe youre saving for a big trip and looking for cash flow outside of your career. Or perhaps youre trying to monetize a hobby you love. Whatever the case, side gigs- no matter what form they take- are becoming a smart move both financially and career-wise. And the smartest people know there are a few questions you should ask before diving in if youre currently employed full-time. 1. Are Side Hustles Even Allowed at My Company? In an economy where 39% of working Millennials have started their own gig on the side, smart employers understand that bans on outside projects can stifle creativity, push employees underground, and create a culture of distrust. They also know they stand to lose out on really exceptional and industrious people. After all, it takes some serious drive to add mora work to your plate when you could spend your evenings lounging around instead. But before moving ahead, you need to scan through the fine print on your contract and the company handbook to make koranvers youre in the clear legally. Read carefully to make sure there isnt a potential conflict of interest (more on this below) or specific policies such as a non-compete clause. Look specifically for sections that discuss how long the non-compete applies, what type of work you are prohibited from doing, and whether or not the non-compete is only regional. If you dont, you could be setting yourself up to get fired or worse, sued. Unless your side hustle is in the exact same line of work as your day job, it probably wont be an issue- but better to be safe than sorry.2. How Do I Know if Theres a Conflict of Interest? The simple, no-mess way to avoid any potential conflicts of interest is to set up a meeting with menschenwrdig resources or your corporate legal rep.Theres no need to go into specific s about the clients, the size of your projects, or what they are paying you. But a quick rundown of the basic information will help you avoid some of the major pitfalls, such as poaching your companys clients, unintentionally stealing intellectual property, or using their resources on your side gig (yes, including that work-issued laptop that you bring home to watch Netflix on). 3. Do I Have to Tell My Boss? My Company? HR?If what you plan to do is allowed by your company, then theres no reason why you necessarily need to disclose your side hustle. But although it isnt legally necessary to tell folks, its more than likely- with social media- that one of your co-workers will find out.If your office is one where a Facebook discovery could lead to an awkward conversation with your boss, save yourself in advance by just giving them a heads-up that youre working on something outside the office. Use this opportunity to explain how the skills you stand to gain from your side hustle will be nefit your employer, your project team, or the company down the road. Pitching your side project this way will temper your supervisorins fears that youve become disenchanted with your job and make him or her focus on the value of your entrepreneurial spirit. Who knows, they might even have some helpful advice or potential connections. This will not only ease any anxiety you might be feeling about doing something sneaky, but will also prevent your supervisor from feeling that you were dishonest or shady with them. The last thing you want is them blaming a recent mistake on the fact youre not focused. 4. How Can I Make it Clear to My Manager That Im Still 100% Into My Current Job?Depending on who youre talking with, the term side hustle can come off as a dirty word. While rare nowadays, there are still those who think an employee wont be able to give his or her best effort at a nine-to-five job while also focusing on a part-time business venture. That by having a side project, you are in some ways cheating on your employer. The best way to put your boss at ease is to have that initial Heres what Im working on conversation and assure them of your commitment. Then, set strict boundaries for yourself and stick to them. Keep in mind that after this discussion, your performance at work might be viewed under a microscope, so you need to be sure youre on time for meetings, hitting your deadlines, and just generally firing on all cylinders. And know this No supervisor, no matter how open he or she is to your project- will be pleased if they catch you working on your own business on their dime, especially if youre not hitting all your goals at work. It can be exhausting to put in a full day and then turn around to work on your side hustle all night. But because it can be such a rewarding way to gain valuable skills, supplement your income, or make you feel great, you should try to make it happen. Because if you do all of the above- checking to make sure youre not doing any thing unethical or illegal and talking to your boss- theres nothing really stopping you.
