ASME Members Start a Grassroots Effort to Put-A-Smile on Chi...

ASME Members Start a Grassroots Effort to Put-A-Smile on Chi... ASME Members Start a Grassroots Effort to Put-A-Smile on Chi... ASME Members Start a Grassroots Effort to Put-A-Smile on Children Affected by DisastersNov. 3, 2017 (Left to right) Koorosh Khanjani, vice chair of the Orange County Section, Selina Eich, president of the ASME University of California, Irvine Student Section, and Simon Pun, treasurer of the Orange County Section, were among the ASME members who volunteered to help assemble the Put-A-Smile packages at Brian James house in Costa Mesa, Calif. ASME sections are being sought to take part in a new grassroots initiative, the Put-A-Smile project, which aims to bring some much-needed cheer to children affected by the recent storms that devastated Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico. The project began in September when several ASME leaders and members from the Orange County, Santa Clara Valley and Los Angeles Sections, motivated by media coverage of the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey in Houston, decided to work together to show beistand for storm victims in the Houston area. Realizing that they didnt have the resources to send essential items, the sections decided instead to send packages of treats that would lift the spirits of some of the children left in the storms wake. Brian James, chair of the Orange County Section, hosted the Put-A-Smile packaging fete at his house. The team of volunteers prepared 500 of the packages during the four-hour gathering. With financial support provided by the three sections, the Put-A-Smile project was launched. Brian James, chair of the Orange County Section, volunteered to oversee the effort. After purchasing the trail mix, chocolate lollipops and fidget spinners that would fill each package, James hosted a packaging party at his house, where several ASME members and student members from the local community met in mid-September to prepare 500 Put-A-Smile bags.In addition to James, volunteers taking part in the packing party included Koorosh Khanjani, vice chair of the Orange County Section Simon Pun, treasurer of the Orange County Section Selina Eich, president of the ASME University of California, Irvine Student Section and ASME member Tuesday Do. Local art designer Barbara Hamagami created decorative kalendertags for the bags, featuring the ASME logo, which included encouraging messages such as You are in our thoughts, Dont forget to share, Forget yesterday, enjoy today, and Help each other. Each of the packages contained a Sees chocolate lollipop, a bag of trail mix, and a fidget spinner.Once assembled, the packages were then shipped to Jared Oehring, a member of the Technical Events and Content Council from Houston, who agreed to distribute the packages to a school in the area. Oehring and his wife, Melissa, worked with the local school district to identify a school where the packages could be distributed. They decided on Lobit Elementary School in Dickinson, Texas, a particular ly hard-hit community where approximately 90 percent of the houses were flooded during Hurricane Harvey. The Put-A-Smile packages were a big success with the students, according to the schools principal, Stephanie Williams, who distributed the gift bags to the children. Williams later relayed her thanks to Melissa Oehring in a text message, adding They were very excited We appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity so muchIn an effort to build on the success of that first Put-A-Smile effort, Michael Roy, the ASME Sections representative for the Societys newly formed Group Engagement Committee, is attempting to expand the project to other ASME sections. Roy, who had previously served as leader of ASMEs former District A, is currently seeking section leaders from ASME sections to help coordinate a Put-A-Smile package program for children affected by Hurricane Irma in Florida. A bright ribbon and a decorative tag with an uplifting message (and the ASME logo) were the finishing touc hes on the 500 Put-A-Smile packages.Roy hopes to have several sections lined up within the next few weeks to raise funds, purchase items, and assemble the packages so they can be sent to Florida by mid-November. Roys employer, the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Co., has agreed to underwrite shipping costs for the first shipment to Florida. As the project expands, Roy hopes to get other corporate sponsors involved in the program. The Put-A-Smile project is a good way to start engaging section leaders and give them opportunities to engage with other section leaders, Roy said. I think it also allows them to engage with the community and with the student section leaders in the local universities. And its good for ASME because if we get these Put-A-Smile packages in front of the younger grade school students, it makes them remember that maybe during a tough time in their life, ASME did something nice for them. If that makes them interested in ASME or encourages them to wan t to learn more about engineering, thats good for society and ASME. It may also make people more aware of who ASME members are and all the good things that they do. I think a lot of good that can come out of this. Several students from Lobit Elementary School with their Put-A-Smile gift bags.In addition to Roys effort to expand the program, two of this years Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) interns, Jonathan Jennings and Kushi Sellahennedige, also have plans to send their own Put-A-Smile packages to children in Puerto Rico. Jennings plans to purchase the items for the gift bags and host the packing and shipping party at his home in Arizona once sufficient funds have been raised by Sellahennedige, who is in charge of donations. For more information on the Group Engagement Committees Put-A-Smile effort, contact Michael Roy by e-mail at roym2asme.org. The cities where working women see the most success

The cities where working women see the most successThe cities where working women see the most successMore women are working than ever before. In 1948 only 32% ofwomenwere in the labor force nationwide and as of February 2018, that number is now at 57%. However, there are certain cities that are home to more successful women than others. SmartAsset looked at100 cities in the U.S. and based on their percentages of full-time working women with annual incomes of $75,000 and up, women business owners and women over 25 with bachelors degrees and ranked them. They also factored in housing costs as a percent of full-time working womens earnings, zentralwert earnings for women working full-time and the unemployment rate of women aged 25 to 64.Virginia FTWSo where are the most successful ladies found? In and around our nations capitalThree cities within the D.C. metro area scored well. Arlington, VA took the top spot and Alexandria, VA and Washington, D.C. were also in the Top 10. Arlington w as found to have the highest paid women in the country, according to Census Bureau data, with the median full-time working woman there earning over $80,200 per year. Another reason why this city is such a hub for prosperous women is they make up 38.6% of people working in their own private businesses and only 35% of women there have just a bachelors degree. The only area they didnt get a top 10 ranking was for housing cost as a percent of income. Alexandria, VA wasnt far behind with the average woman making $67,000 annually there. And in D.C. more and more women are starting their own businesses as women make up almost 40% of business owners. This data falls in line with another recent SmartAsset listthat ranked women who work in technology and D.C. was found to be the No.1 city for women when it came to salary and the highest number of women working in this industry.Interestingly no single region of the country dominated this list. Instead the Mid-Atlantic, the West Coast, the South, the Southwest and the Midwest are all represented in the top 10. Check out the full list below.

Resume Promotes Tech Executive for CTO Job

Resume Promotes Tech Executive for CTO Job Resume Promotes Tech Executive for CTO Job Richard Russell’s career goals changed, but his resume stayed the same. With help from a certified professional resume writer, a sleek new document promotes the VP to the next level.Richard Russell has achieved big successes â€" and he has the stats to back it up. He has been the lead on projects for major clients at the systems integrator where he works as global technology manager/chief architect; he has managed on-site and offshore information-technology teams; and he has increased the bottom-line profit on many projects.Unfortunately, his resume obscured or omitted those achievements. That language barrier blocked him from moving to a position as vice president of technology; chief technology officer or chief information officer.Russell’s resume suffered from a condition professional resume writers call “death by bullets,” said J.M. Auron, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders resume-writing service and helped Russell refurbish his document. The go al of the transformation: to show prospective employers his value in a role of greater responsibility.Russell, of Lillian, Ala., had a resume that didn’t focus on his leadership, achievements or impact on the business. It was lost in lists that detailed his many qualifications and the projects he managed. A sample of bullets on Russell’s original resume read: Experienced leader and technical professional who uses sound technical expertise in building successful business integrations. Multi-talented professional with extensive experience planning, architecting, and implementing enterprise systems. “(He) cherry-picked his achievements (in the original resume),” Auron said. In this case, the resume writer knew he had to dig deeper. He had to get to know Russell to uncover what he did differently from other senior staffers in comparable positions.Auron eliminated many of the bullets, including the bulleted summary that introduced the resume reader to Russell. Instead, the new version opens with a narrative:“Multifaceted senior IT leader with more than a decade of experience in application design and implementation for the enterprise. Acknowledged thought leader, able to effectively integrate IT realities with strategic business goals. Dynamic change agent who works productively with senior management and internal/external stakeholders to ensure smooth operational transitions. Skilled mentor and coach who effectively leads on- and off-shore teams. Customer-focused professional who has consistently increased profit and grown bottom-line.”Clearing up the confusionThe origina l resume was so unclear that most readers thought he had held dozens of jobs, despite the fact that he’d been with the same company since 2002. Auron fixed the appearance of multiple jobs - a lack of commitment recruiters dismiss as “job hopping”- by cleaning up Russell’s job descriptions and making it clear which jobs were just new projects at the same employer, which were promotions and which were new jobs at new companies. The result is a resume loaded with technical details of all the systems and software technology he is familiar with; it employs industry-specific terms like “managing end-state” and “beta testing,” while making it clear that Russell is a manager and leader.“I truly enjoy working with customers and leading engineering teams,” Russell said. “Being a solutions integrator delivering technology to customers to better their business performance is my specialty. I have spent my career managing end-state (systems) with software distribution tools .” The new resume puts his passion - and most importantly, his career goals - front and center.

A look at outsourcing giant Nexient (and how to get hired there)

A look at outsourcing giant Nexient (and how to get hired there) A look at outsourcing giant Nexient (and how to get hired there) The outsourcing industry isn’t what it used to be. In the early 2000s, many U.S.-based companies looked offshore to pick up some slack while cutting costs in the office, but many of those same companies found that international outsourcing wasn’t the answer. That’s how Nexient was born. With a product-minded approach, Nexient connects companies with  talent teams in Midwest tech hubs, keeping all operations US-based.Here’s the rundown of the only U.S. tech firm among the World’s Top 100 outsourcers.Nexient basicsSize: 500-600 employeesIndustry: Information Technology and ServicesLocations:  Nexient’s headquarters are in Newark, California. Nexient has three  product development centers in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kokomo, Indiana, and Columbus, Ohio.Founded: 2009CEO: Mark OrttungHow much do Nexient employees make? The average salary for a Nexient employee is $133,111 per year. Ladders estimates are based on our calculations. For software developers, the average salary at Nexient is $124,000, compared to the $109,405 national average for that role. The estimated salary for a scrum master is $101,667, while the estimated salary for an agile business analyst is $90,000.Nexient jobsNexient is currently hiring for 46 positions, including Data Engineer, Java Developer, DevOps Engineer, Salesforce Project Manager, and more. Find a full list of open roles on Ladders’  Nexient Jobs page. What the CEO says it takes to get hired at NexientCEO Mark Orttung’s number one tip for getting hired at Nexient is to present authenticity.“My best tip would be for people to be really authentic about what they’re looking for and ask us questions,” Orttung said.Orttung looks for employees who want the job to be a two-way transaction; not only are employees hitting company goals but they also never stop developing their skills. It doesn’t matter if you’re a software engineer or a customer experience expert, the most impressive candidates are those who consider themselv es life-long students.“Whichever discipline they’re coming into, what we’re really looking for is people who really want to continue learning,”  Orttung said.Orttung recommends that candidate’s interviewing for Nexient take time to compare and contrast the job description against their own aspirations.“It should be that you’re trying to find that match, not just trying to impress them,” Orttung said. “But one of the ways you’re going to impress us is by knowing what you want and asking us big questions around that to make sure it goes both ways.”What the Vice President of People says about getting hired at NexientThrough and through, Nexient Vice President of People  Dan Broekhuizen echos the same sentiments as Orttung.“We look for people who will thrive in a product-minded environment,”  Broekhuizen wrote to Ladders. “You should have a good understanding of your technology or function but remain hungry to learn more. You’re humble and generous in your approach to others and you’re a strong collaborator in small, cross-functional teams.”When it comes to interviewing tips,  Broekhuizen places the same emphasis on authenticity as Orttung does.“Share exactly what you know and don’t be afraid to tell us what you don’t know â€" that’s where learning begins!”  Broekhuizen wrote. “Be who you are, because we cannot work with replicas of others. The strength of our culture as a whole comes from the incredible, diverse individuals who join together.”Broekhuizen encourages candidates to “come with a love of technology” and the knowledge, skills and personal attributes that make up a well-rounded candidate.Overall, Nexient is looking for candidates who are interested in more than just a salaried position.“If you are looking for more than just a job, a paycheck and a place to park your car (or bike), then Nexient is open to talking with you,”  Broekhuizen wrote “We’ll talk about your career, how we can help you br ing out the best version of yourself, how you can make us better and how together we can make our clients assured partnering with Nexient was the best decision.”

How To Get An In At A Company You Like

How To Get An In At A Company You Like How To Get An In At A Company You Like It’s true that job search is a numbers game â€" it just is not the numbers most people think of. Applying for as many jobs hither and yon all over the Internet is the game most candidates play. But the only numbers successful candidates concern themselves with are the numbers of times they make â€" and leverage â€" a real human connection at a company they’re interested in. Let’s talk about how to do it. I’d rather see you invest a bit more time using this method, than spending the same amount of time hitting the “apply” and “submit” buttons for 10 job opportunities. Remember, those aren’t the numbers you want. What works is applying for fewer opportunities, but for each of those, making direct contact with a relevant person every single time. This is just the 1st step in my full roadmap to bypassing HR and directly reaching the right decision makers. If you work from home, use these 12 crucial tips every day

If you work from home, use these 12 crucial tips every day If you work from home, use these 12 crucial tips every day Before I  retired at 35, I used to work from home in my boxer shorts. Okay, sometimes I’d have a shirt, but the point is working out of a home office made all the difference in the world. It meant I could be ME.It meant that I could choose the perfect working environment for me.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!No cubicle. No coworkers asking me questions and no overhearing conversations and other office chatter and general hum that permeates through typical office buildings. It was just me. Working from home. Getting my work done â€" often in half the time it took when I worked in an office, which meant I had way more time for myself.Working from home was just straight  wonderful. But, here’s the thing: Working from home is a privilege that requires additional responsibilities. Just like  being your own boss, it comes with it an additional layer of management that you need to carefully manage.Done wrong, you could end up getting fired and have a hard time finding a job replacement â€" unless, of course, you have a  killer resume  at the ready. You might also unintentionally limit your income and promotions.Take it from Chris who blogs at  Money Stir. He’s worked out of his home office for eight straight years, and here are the top 12 tips that he’s learned over those years of working in peace and quiet.Use these 12 tips to succeed in your work from home job#1: CommunicationWithout a doubt,  communication  is the undercurrent in working from home successfully. It’s kind of like how humans need air to breathe. If we don’t communicate well, a work from home arrangement won’t work. This idea is true with most jobs but becomes a top priority when working remotely. That’s because your primary connection with the company you work for and your co-workers is 100% through the digital space. If you don’t get good at communicating over the internet, you will leave a path of confusion and frustration.Excellent communication isn’t just about how much you communicate. It has more to do with being clear, concise, and direct.Over the years I’ve focused on  over-communication, which I think is a good thing at its core. But I’m learning to write what I mean in fewer words, to make what I’m trying to communicate easier to digest and understand.Great communication comes down to a few core principles: Ask the right questions  as early as possible Make sure you understand each request or task Explain complex problems for anyone to understand, regardless of their background Be careful about what assumptions you make Take an active role in whatever you touch #2: Stay Organized and Work EfficientlyYou could be at the top of your field, but if you don’t carefully manage your workday, you could fall flat on your face when working from home.I’ve worked with well-intentioned individuals who struggle to get this right. They were smart and talented but had a hard time organizing their time when working through multiple priorities at home. It’s about  making order out of chaos. The better you become at what you do regularly, the more the company will go to you in solving those problems.Being organized means increased responsibilities and more tasks coming your way (and can anyone say cha-ching).This idea isn’t about letting your employer put  unrealistic expectations  on your time; it’s about increasing your work efficiency. In most work at home situations, no one is going to dictate your every move. You have to figure this out on your own.A few questions I like to ask myself to keep on track: Are my priorities for today and this week clear? Am I being blocked by anyone, and have I communicated this clearly to the correct people? Are the expectations of what I will accomplish with my time realistic? In regards to what I am working on: what are the main risks? Have I communicated these risks clearly? As you can probably tell, being organized is highly coupled with communication. Both communication and organization depend on each other, and the more you can improve these skills, the more you will increase your value. If you want to excel at working from home, focus on your communication and organizational skills. You’ll decimate your competition if you do.#3: Honesty and TrustThere is an element of working from home that requires a  higher level of trust than working in an office. Though they can’t see you, people still depend on you to get your job done. The more you can convince your co-workers that you know what you are doing, and are reliable in solving problems, the more you increase your value as a remote worker.Working out of your home office,  your value should be evident through your day-to-day output. If the company you work for starts to wonder if you are working at all, that is a bad sign.Once you get to the point where people learn to rely upon you for high-value ou tput, they will start to give you the benefit of the doubt. When something takes you longer than expected, they assume this is because it is a more complex task than expected; as opposed to questioning your abilities or work ethic. And I can’t stress how important this is when working from home. When costs get tight, you don’t want to be at the top of the list of people to be let go. Remember that in some organizations, “out of sight, out of mind”.It’s easier for a company to fire remote employees than their in-office counterparts. You can counteract this by being a necessary component on your team.#4: Maintain Organic RelationshipsI was born an introvert and still very much associate with that. I suffer from social anxiety when I’m in crowds of people I don’t know very well. But even if you are an introvert like me, we all need human connection. When working from home, this becomes more vital. Building personal relationships is harder when you aren’t physically working with people.Creating an organic connection with your co-workers is about team dynamics, and it’s tougher than you may think. Strong teams know each other well. The more you can identify a human behind a name, the more you can collaborate effectively with each other. There are several ways you can build strong personal connections when working from home:Company ChatNot being able to walk up to someone and have a physical conversation means it is difficult in having more in-depth discussions. Email does not work great when there’s a ton of back and forth.Chat software, like  Slack, helps solve this problem. It allows you to have private conversations with individuals, or have rooms dedicated to teams. It also provides a way of having lighter social conversations through general chat rooms. These can be fun and gives a break from the regular day-to-day conversations.Video ConferencingBeing able to see your coworkers regularly during meetings does a great job connecting with your co workers on a personal level. You can see expressions, hear voices, and interact with people, not much different from what you would do in an office environment. If you work for a company that does not have this setup, I highly suggest you push them to implement video chat company-wide. Even if your company has a central office, they should be able to install a webcam so that you can be a part of meetings in the office. Google Hangouts and  Zoom  are great options. You will want to have a decent web camera that produces a clear picture. Even if you don’t end up doing video conferences, you will want to have a good headset or microphone, that will record your voice crisp and clear. It can be annoying to be on a call with someone who is talking, but no one can understand what they are saying. “Did anyone hear what Chris said?”Face-to-Face GatheringsSpending in-person time with your co-workers adds a human element that is hard to replicate when you are a digital nomad. Sharing meals , chatting over a beer, and attending conferences can do wonders in building a personal bond with your online co-workers.The goal is not necessarily to become best friends with everyone at your company. But the more you can connect with others on a personal level, the more integrated you become into that company. If you work remotely for a company and don’t do any of the above, I recommend you request these things. Otherwise, you are going to feel like you work on an island, and work depression can set in quickly.#5: Internet Connection and ReliabilityWhen working from home,  your  internet connection  is your lifeline. When it goes down, you might be stuck. Without it, you’re left sitting at your desk twiddling your thumbs.I’ve worked with people who tend always to have some kind of internet issue. They either take forever downloading a large file (which wastes time), or their internet is not reliable, and they will frequently go offline.Besides slowing you down (literally), i t doesn’t put you in a positive light if you seem to have constant internet issues. Having a reliable internet connection is a  vital aspect of working from home.In addition to getting stable internet, spend extra money ($100-$300) on a reliable wireless router. The best routers are mostly set it up and forget about it and will work reliably for multiple years. The one I use has lasted over 3-years and is still going strong.I can even get a reliable internet connection from my front porch! What if you are needed for a critical issue and end up losing the internet? Losing your internet connection can happen to anyone, but the more you can reduce this risk based on your internet provider and hardware, the less likely this will occur at the wrong time.#6: Your Sleep Habits Are ImportantBeing at the top of your game means you need to prioritize your physical wellbeing, and that definitely includes sleep. If you are always dead tired when you work at home, you are going to find it challe nging to focus on the problems at hand. You also might end up taking your frustration out on your coworkers or managers, which is never a good thing. In my case, when my sleep schedule is not consistent or if I’m having problems sleeping, my monitor feels like a gateway to hell. Words look like mush and issues seem impossible to solve. My comfortable work environment doesn’t make this any easier. And, using smart phones and other digital devices makes getting sleep even tougher.  From StatistaSave yourself pain and suffering by making sure you are performing at the top of your game. Figure out what sleep schedule works best for you and your family, and try to stick to it (during the weekdays at least).#7:  Work  ScheduleIn most cases, your remote employer will talk to you about the expectations on the hours you work, and just because you work from home, that doesn’t mean you need to be “always on”.Whatever is decided and agreed upon, stick as closely to the plan as possible. And make sure you are keeping timezones in mind.If you are scheduled to start working at 8 AM MST, make sure you are online at that time, and not 8:15 AM. Keeping a regular schedule relates to building trust with your company. This idea might seem like a small issue, but it’s not good if your manager constantly wonders if you’re actually in front of your computer. Coming across as flaky doesn’t put you in a positive light. When you need to take off early, or take an extended lunch, make sure you communicate when you will be gone and about when you think you will be back. It’s not about having people micromanage your time; it’s to limit the possibility of someone looking for you and not being able to get a hold of you.Do this a few times, and people might start to wonder what you are “really” doing at home.#8: DistractionsHave you ever tried to get work done with a small child yelling in your ear? It’s not fun, and it is incredibly hard to focus. Let’s face it: For s ome of us, a remote job may not be as fun as it sounds.Having a distraction-free work at home environment will make your time more efficient. It also doesn’t help your work at home status if your coworkers think that you spend most of your time watching kids at home.Luckily, my kids are older, and even when they are off from school, they keep themselves busy by playing outside or doing things on their own in our house. In the past, I was interviewing with a possible employer for a remote position. At the time, my youngest daughter would have these tantrum fits (she was four years old at the time).During this video interview, she would storm into my office and start wailing. I’m convinced that part of the reason they didn’t make me a job offer was that they were concerned I didn’t have a place where I could work undistracted.#9: Your Work Ethic CountsHaving a solid work ethic is required while working at home. Would you hire someone to do a job who you thought was lazy?Develop ing a driven work ethic takes time, and isn’t going to form just because you are working from home magically. It helps if you like what you do, and have lots of experience. It also helps in thinking about what you are  working towards. Do you envision having this job long-term? Or are you pursuing financial independence?Like any job, some days you might find it hard to work. But if you have an end goal in mind, this can help you push forward. The goal is to work as hard as you can, to give you more options in the future. This goal might be more money, or the opportunity to switch to a different role that fits you better.#10:  Home Office Optimizations MatterBeing able to work from your home office means that you can  define your work environment.Improve anything that will help make your day more enjoyable. For me, I’ve grown to love working on Mac laptops, as I’ve found them to be reliable and I don’t have to worry about viruses (so I’ve always requested a Mac work computer ). I also like to use a standing desk, and have decent speakers where I can pump up the music and enjoy some Kendric Lamar.Anything that is going to make you feel comfortable, relaxed (but not too relaxed), and helps you focus on solving problems, is money well spent. Some of these things you might have to cover out of your own pocket. But you won’t know unless you ask!A crappy chair that gives you back pain is going to become a bigger problem over time. Solve these types of issues early, and your future self will thank you.More recently, I’ve converted to a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, which has simplified my computer setup. I also have a USBC/Thunderbolt 3 doc that allows me to connect + charge my laptop with one cable to all of my workstation equipment: monitors, ethernet, speakers, charging cables, etc.And for the love of God, please set up a computer backup solution! There are online backup services you can use, or like me, you could purchase a computer backup drive that i s compatible with your OS. I use a WD My Passport drive, and it works flawlessly with my setup. I don’t have to think about it and know if I am connected to my workstation, everything is getting backed up regularly.#11: Adjust and Contort All The TimeThere will be times when you will work on things that don’t fill you with feelings of butterflies and rainbows. But remember, working from home means there are hundreds, if not thousands of people who would love to do what you are doing.Being a valuable remote employee means that you are willing to tackle things that make you uncomfortable, up to a certain point. If you push back on every task that is assigned to you because it doesn’t fit with what you want to do, eventually your employer might decide they need to find someone who fits that role better.Don’t underestimate the value of being a kick-ass problem solver. Learning new things, or tackling problems that make your insides squeal, can often have you learning much more t han if you only stuck to what makes you comfortable. It takes skill and tact to understand what type of tasks to push back against so I would advise you to move forward carefully until you know your value and your strengths.#12: Own Your MistakesRemember, life isn’t about being perfect. When you make a mistake, own up to your part of the problem. Show your coworkers and managers how you are going to prevent this problem from happening again.Owning your mistakes not only is a good mentality to have in general, but it reflects how valuable of a remote employee you are.If you are continually looking for others to blame and playing the blame game whenever you can, this erodes how much people trust you.  People will wonder if you are trying to cover your tracks and if you care about what happened. You might work alone in your home office, but you are still part of a team. Show that you are a team player and care about the results and effectiveness of the team above everything else.Summa ryWorking from home is a tremendous opportunity. You have more freedom with your time, and the commute is fantastic. But just because you work in your home office, doesn’t mean you can take it easy and watch Netflix all day. Taking your job seriously, and improving your communication and organizational skills, ensure that someone will most likely always be looking to add you to their team. This post was expertly written by Chris from  Money Stir  and was originally published on  The Money Mix. Bionic Patch Succeeds When Hearts Fail

Bionic Patch Succeeds When Hearts Fail Bionic Patch Succeeds When Hearts Fail Bionic Patch Succeeds When Hearts Fail A new cardiac patch engineered by nanotechnologists at Tel Aviv University offers a promising and less invasive alternative to heart transplantation and bulky mechanical assistive devices. Integrating both living tissue and nanoelectronics, the so-called cyber heart patch is a bold new direction in the repair of structural heart damage, with future implications for the treatment of degenerative brain or spinal cord conditions. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says more than five million Americans are living with heart failure today, and the disease is on the rise as our average life expectancy increases. For the most severely ill patients, heart transplantation remains the treatment of last resort when drugs or assistive devices fail. The growing demand for donated hearts is outpacing the supply more rapidly than ever. Consequently, an estimated 25% of patients on the heart transplant waiting list will die before a suitable donor is found. Although tissue engineers have been experimenting with repair patches using all-organic tissues, the new device is the first to incorporate electronics to help physicians remotely monitor and regulate heart function, says lead researcher Tal Dvir of TAUs Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. In a recent Nature Materials article, Dvir introduced his patch as a conceptually new approach where a dedicated freestanding electronic network is built within an engineered tissue and used to collect data from its surroundings. A remotely regulated living bionic heart. The engineered tissue is comprised of living cardiac cells, polymers, and a complex nanoelectronic system. Image: Tel Aviv University The Need CDC estimates about half of newly diagnosed heart failure patients die within five years. The disease is a contributing factor in one of every nine deaths each year. As an age-related disease, heart failure is more common as U.S. life expectancy increases and more patients live long enough for their disease to progress to the end stage. Depending on the severity of the disease at diagnosis, doctors treat heart disease with drugs or mechanical implants such as left ventricular assist devices (LVADS). Several groups around the world are pursuing the ultimate mechanical treatment, a total artificial heart. Meanwhile, heart transplantation is considered the destination treatment for patients who have run out of other options. A transplant may be the ultimate course of action for patients with coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy, hypertensive heart disease, or congential/valvular disease. There are approximately 4,223 people waiting for a heart transplant, and on average they wait about four months before a suitable organ materializes. Thats too long for many patients with end-stage heart failure, about half of whom die within a year of their diagnosis. The LVAD is currently used as a bridge therapy to keep patients alive until a donor heart becomes available. The technology has saved or prolonged lives but is not a permanent solution. The promise of Dvirs bionic patch is for a less obtrusive technology that can both assist the heart and help it to regrow itself. The Breakthrough In a typical cardiac patch, expanding/contracting cells are seeded onto a degradable biomaterial that can be implanted on the heart. The biomaterial supports the cells long enough for them to bind to the host organ and then dissolves, leaving the cells in place to function as a patch. Dvirs team wanted to add critical new features to a patch that could continually report back on how the implanted cells were functioning and provide a way for doctors to monitor and control the devices performance after treatment. The team fabricated a porous electronic mesh with multiple electrodes to capture data on tissue function, to send electrical current to cells, and to release drugs to achieve desired effects such as cell growth. The electronics and cardiac cells were integrated with a 3D biomaterial scaffold composed of nanofibers to form the tissue, which was then folded into a thicker, standalone patch. Integrating multifunctional electronics with engineered cardiac patches represents a new direction in tissue engineering, where living cells and tissues interact with electronics to improve tissue function, he wrote. Sensors and electronics on Dvirs bionic patch can measure heart performance and deliver appropriate levels of electrical stimulation to keep it pumping optimally. Electroactive polymers embedded in the patch can be activated to deliver medication directly to the heart. These capabilities would make it possible, he says, for doctors to monitor and assess a patients health status from a remote computer, and to adjust the heart rhythm or release drugs as needed. Ultimately the group hopes to design a self-regulating patch that can autonomously sense, recognize, and intervene on certain changes in heart function. The breakthrough is very science fiction, but its already here, and we expect it to move cardiac research forward in a big way, Dvir says. Michael MacRae is an independent writer. Learn about the latest trends in bioengineering at ASMEs NEMB Conference. For Further Discussion It's very science fiction, but it's already here, and we expect it to move cardiac research forward in a big way.Dr. Tal Dvir, Tel Aviv University

How Successful People Spend Their Time After Work - The Muse

How Successful People Spend Their Time After Work - The Muse How Successful People Spend Their Time After Work When Neil Patrick Harris was in his late teens and early 20s, he rocketed into fame starring on the hit TV show, Doogie Howser, M.D. Precocious and prodigiously talented, he quickly became one of the most sought-after young actors of his generation. Many of Harris’ young Hollywood friends liked to drink, do drugs, and party. Harris quickly realized that the “club scene” wasn’t for him, so he started spending his free time in a different way. As he recounts in his autobiography, whenever he had a couple weeks of vacation time, he would fly to NYC to see as many Broadway shows as he possibly could. Sometimes, that meant two shows a day. Why? He wanted to spend his free time watching masterful actors at the top of their game. Harris knew that he would absorb priceless lessons at every performance- and he did. He’s gone on to build a long, celebrated career as an award-winning actor, writer, director, presenter, and host. The way you spend your time outside of work- what you do on your evenings, weekends, and vacations- can have a big impact on the trajectory of your career. If you want to be highly successful at work, you have to be thoughtful and intentional with the way you spend your time outside of work, too. Think back to your last few evenings, weekends, or holidays. How did you spend your time? Are your after-hours activities helping you to build the career that you want- or holding you back? If it’s time for a new post-work ritual, here’s a list to inspire you- 10 ways successful people spend their time after work. 1. They Work Out I know, I know. You’ve heard this advice so many times before. But this point can’t be overemphasized. It’s widely known that following a consistent fitness regime boosts your creativity, confidence, and resilience, both at work and in your personal life. There’s no avoiding it: Moving your body is good for your career. Cases in point: Barack and Michelle Obama are proud gym enthusiasts. Smart CEOs bring yoga to the office and even practice alongside their employees. If you want to enhance your productivity during the eight hours you’re at work, spend at least a little of your free time moving your body. 2. They Seek Inspiration and Fresh Experiences Harris goes to the theater- and is in the theater. Bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert traveled the world (just read Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia). Author and business and creativity expert Danielle LaPorte recommends getting out of your obvious bubble: If you’re a chef, go to a museum. If you’re a painter, head to a top restaurant. Seek inspiration in unexpected places. Putting yourself in new, intriguing environments- in your own city or on a trip far from home- activates your brain in new ways and can lead to a burst of creative problem-solving genius. Domesticity can be beautiful, but innovators, top performers, and CEOs are rarely “couch potatoes” who spend all their free time parked at home. 3. They Build Authentic Relationships Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. president, was famous for his legendary dinner parties, where he’d invite a variety of people he found fascinating and then pose a deep, philosophical question for everyone at the table to answer- no small talk allowed! Jefferson understood the value of building relationships- real, face-to-face connections and conversations that go deeper than “Wow, how about this heat wave we’re having?” When was the last time you had a deep, meaningful, phone-free conversation with a colleague, friend, or mentor? Take a cue from Jefferson and throw a “Jeffersonian Dinner” at your own home. The connections you make and the ideas that spring forth could change the course of your career. 4. They Say “No” (a Lot) The late Steve Jobs once said, “People think ‘focus’ means saying ‘yes’ to the thing you've got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying ‘no’ to the hundred other good ideas that there are.” Accomplished people know that they can’t do everything, be everywhere, and help everyone all in one day- or one lifetime. They know that they can’t take on every project, attend every holiday party, or agree to every friendly “Can I pick your brain?” request. They choose their battles carefully and avoid spreading themselves too thin. Here’s a good policy for fielding requests in your life: When someone asks you to do something, ask yourself, “What is my main focus right now?”- followed by, “Will saying ‘yes’ to this request help me to achieve that main objective, or will saying ‘yes’ make it harder?” 5. They Spend Time in Nature Ever heard of “nature deficit disorder?” It’s a phrase first used by Richard Louv in his book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder. Richard feels that our indoor lifestyles are contributing to a wide range of health and behavioral problems. As a psychologist and emotional health expert, I would have to agree. It’s tough to be your best self- and do your best work- when you’ve been breathing air-conditioned air and working under fluorescent lights for weeks on end. That’s not an ideal way to work or live. Ambitious people connect with nature and the outdoors, allowing the beauty of the environment (as well as the wonderful opportunities that nature offers- like hiking, surfing, skiing, and climbing) to replenish their energy. 6. They Unplug More and more people are carving out time for an “unplugged” day or weekend- which means no devices, no Wi-Fi, no emails, and no social media- saying this time renews their mind, body, and spirit. There’s even a new national holiday devoted to unplugging. Even Oprah Winfrey (arguably one of the busiest people on the planet!) still finds time to curl up with a good book once in a while or chill out in her jammies, preserving her Sundays for relaxation and tech-free time. “I always give myself Sundays as a spiritual base of renewal- a day when I do absolutely nothing,” she says. Technology is miraculous, but highly successful people know that unplugged time is essential, too. 7. They Get the Most Out of Their Evening Routines We all know the power of morning routines to set ourselves up for a productive day- but many successful people also know that finishing their day off the right way sets them up for a high-energy, productive, creative tomorrow. Benjamin Franklin engaged in healthy introspection every night before bed, asking himself, “What good have I done today?” Master filmmaker, Ingmar Bergman, used to read before going to sleep- which has been proven to reduce stress. Sheryl Sandberg shuts off her phone at night when she goes to sleep, because she doesn’t want to be woken up. Huffington Post President Arianna Huffington adds, “Our creativity, ingenuity, confidence, leadership, and decision-making can all be enhanced simply by getting enough sleep.” Paying attention to your evening routine primes you to wake up the next morning, feeling refreshed and restored, so you can achieve more success and happiness. 8. They Take Real Vacations A picture- like Taylor Swift, on vacay, savoring the sunshine and crystal blue waters- speaks a thousand words: If Swift can find time in her schedule for a real vacation, so can you. 9. They Take Classes and Invest in Themselves The former CEO of Twitter, Dick Costolo, says that studying improv comedy allowed him to become a better leader. Actress Emma Watson, who could easily rest on her Harry Potter laurels for the rest of her career, chose to pursue higher education at Brown University. Whether it’s life coaching, psychotherapy, an acting workshop, graduate school, or a weekend-long certification program on a topic that intrigues you, successful people know that when you invest in yourself- whether you’re investing in your mind, body, or spirit- it’s all going to contribute to your professional success. 10. They De-stress and Take Care of Themselves Marianne Elliot, a human rights lawyer who was stationed in war-torn Afghanistan, began practicing yoga and yogic breathing techniques to help create a moment of peace in the midst of unspeakable violence. She found that her yoga practice- even just taking a few deep, cleansing breaths- preserved her sanity and allowed her to do her important work under extraordinarily stressful circumstances. OK, so maybe you don’t work in a war-torn region like Marianne did. But wherever you work and whatever you do, you’re bound to experience moments of stress, uncertainty, foggy thinking, or tiredness. If you haven’t been taking good care of yourself- if your sleep habits are out of whack, if your nutrition is shaky, or if you’ve allowed your emotions to build up like steam in a kettle- then you’re going to have a much harder time navigating moments of stress. Successful people understand that if you’re feeling run down, distracted, or unwell, that’s going to influence your quality of work and hinder your success. Take a cue from Neil Patrick Harris, Oprah, Taylor Swift, Michelle Obama, Marianne Elliot, and other super-achievers like them: Use your free time wisely- make healthy, intentional choices during your evenings, weekends, and vacations- and you’ll bring even more energy and brilliance to your work. There are 168 hours in every week. You probably spend 40 at work, leaving you with 128 to sleep, eat, rest, and spend however you want. What will you choose? Use your time well.

The real secret to productivity how to do less with more impact

The real secret to productivity how to do less with more impact The real secret to productivity how to do less with more impact During my career, I’ve had many “bosses”?- ?real corporate employers, co-founders, clients. What I can certainly see as a common trait between all of them?- ?they love everything about productivity. I mean it’s a common sense right?- ?everyone loves doing more in less time. Here is something that is not a common sense?- ?one of the easiest and most effective ways I’ve used to increase my productivity is actually doing Less. One of the most effective ways to increase your productivity is actually doing less!Seems counterintuitive? You want to do more not less, right? The world is full of surprises. Here are four main reasons why doing less means completing more and how to implement the less doing in your day.4 Reasons why doing less means completing moreHere comes the “Aha” moment?- ?It’s all about leveraging our human nature by doing a single thing at a time. Going with what we are good at, instead of going against it. Without further ado, see the four reasons why doing less means completing more:1. Flow is hard to create and easy to lose when multitaskingHave you heard about flow? Lets see how Wikipedia defines it:Flow, also known as the zone, is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. In other words, Flow is when you are so deeply involved in a single task, that you are at your best. The biggest enemy of the Flow??Doing more than a single activity a.k.a. multitasking. In your efforts to complete more than one thing at a time, you are not only failing to do so but the results you achieve in the end are below par.Multitasking?- ?subpar results and more time. Not cool.2. Your memory cannot perform correctly while switchingAfter we’ve addressed multitasking, let me introduce you to its closest relative. Interruption. Similarly to multitasking, interruption causes us to switch between tasks. Every switch be tween two tasks has two main negative effects:a) There is a switching cost. Your ability to complete the task you undertook in an optimal way lowers significantly when interrupted.b) It takes you about 23 minutes to regain the level of productivity (Flow) once you’ve been interrupted.3. The breaks between tasks help you prepare betterOne great byproduct of doing a single task at a time is that you are able to take more frequent breaks. Breaks, when voluntary, are great! Here is why:a) Your brain gets a bit rest and gets energy to tackle the new problemb) Breaks make sure you don’t lose your overall aim. They give you the needed time to look at the bigger picture.c) Breaks help you consciously or unconsciously to prepare and create an action plan for tackling the next taskRelated articles:A real example of a resume without work experience that has impactA powerful one page resume exampleWhat stops us from changing careers?4. You are doing the most important thingLast but not leas t, when we are forced to do but a single thing we are making sure we are doing the most important thing. This doesn’t need much proof. Just ask yourself?- ?if you were allowed to do just one thing today, wouldn’t it be the most important one?4 Ways to implement it in your dayOK, you now know why doing less means achieving more. Lets address the elephant in the room. The How.1. Use a task management systemIf you are not using a task management system?- ?use one. Thousands of engineers are working on such system and making the software make your life easier. Here are few things to look for when selecting a task management system: Being able to get an overview of your immediate tasks?- ?Kanban boards are a great visual tool. All successful task management systems have one out of the box. Don’t settle for less.Work-In-Progress Limits?- ?Want to do a single thing? Make sure your task management system helps you fight distractions and allow for you to define how many tasks you will be taking at a time.2. Plan Just A Few Tasks AheadOne of the main reasons we multitask is that we are overwhelmed by the volume of the upcoming work. We start feeling a need to do more than one thing at a time. Here is a simple tip for you. Plan using milestones and break only the next milestone. This way you won’t have a mile-long backlog to stress about.3. Use software to block you from distractionsIn this time of unlimited information, we have become habitual self-distractors. I mean honestly?- ?is Facebook bookmarked in your browser? Use software to help you in your quest against distractions. There are multiple plugins that will help you stay more focused on your work. Here is the one I use: “Stay Focused”P.S. I have no affiliation with this plugin.4. Use Blocks Dedicated To Certain Task OnlyKeep yourself and the time in control by scheduling a time block for your activities. This way your brain knows what it is supposed to be working on. Don’t forget to schedule time b locks for rest too. Ready to do less and impress?I hope, by now, you are sold on doing less and being more productive. Treat multitasking, distractions, and interruptions as a disease and flow as the holy grail. Most importantly?- ?try it. Don’t just read about it?- ?try it and see what results it brings you and your team.Don’t just read about it?- ?Try it for yourself. If you like the article, hit the share button.
